What does DAS involve? How much does it cost?

The Direct Access Scheme allows for provisional licence holders aged 21 and over to take their motorcycle test on a machine larger than 46bhp and on successful completion ride any size machine without restriction.
Riders can still only ride 125cc (14.6bhp) motorcycles unsupervised hence the DAS course always takes place with a qualified instructor present.
We use Honda 500cc motorcycles (over 50bhp) and conduct the training at times to suit the trainee.
The cost of DAS training is £80 per half day (minimum) or £150 per complete day of training. The maximum student/instructor ratio is 2:1, one to one instruction can be requested although a surcharge will be added at busy times.
Included in the price is use of a school bike and helmet and waterproofs. Gloves are required and can be bought on the day.
A certain standard of riding ability is required before DAS training can commence on a 50bhp motorcycle. All skills learned on a small bike (for example during CBT) will transfer to the bigger bike. Our experience shows that generally CBT trainees should be riding DAS bikes by the second day, and ready for test by day five. These times vary from person to person.
Practical test dates can be booked by us in advance and we often have dates available and structure the courses around those dates and trainee requirements.
Prior to the practical test you must have successfully completed the Motorcycle Theory Test. Further information about the theory test with online practice and booking can be found at http://www.dsa.gov.uk
